Stellar reviews for 2014 Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs

The most treasured of our Single Vineyard range, our 2014 Pinot Noirs are now available for tasting at our Cellar Door and purchase online. It's an exciting time at Gibbston Valley Winery. Our winemaking team is extremely pleased with the 2014 vintage, and they're not the only ones.

Bob Campbell, master of wine, ranked our certified-organic 2014 School House as the No. 1 Central Otago Pinot Noir, describing it as a "very classy wine with excellent cellaring potential."

In addition to the 2014 School House from our vineyard in Bendigo, this release includes the certified-organic  2014 Le Maitre and 2014 Glenlee Pinot Noirs from our Gibbston vineyards and the 2014 China Terrace Pinot Noir also from Bendigo. Each one is an elegant expression of terroir – the taste and aroma imparted to a wine based on a particular region’s climate, soil and other unique characteristics.

Along with Campbell's No. 1 ranking, our single vineyards received positive reviews from renowned wine writers Michael Cooper and Raymond Chan, among others.

“We’re very happy all around,” said Gibbston Valley Chief Winemaker Christopher Keys. "Our 2014 Pinot Noirs are the strongest we've released across all our wine ranges."

“The reason I like vintage 2014 so much is because these Pinot Noirs have all the things you want in good wine – beauty, concentration, length – but that’s just the beginning,” said Keys.

2014 School House - A Lesson in Loveliness
97 pts, 5 stars
From School House vineyard in Bendigo with typically deep, ruby colour and dense, ripe dark-fleshed plum, black cherry, blackberry spice, anise and nutty oak flavours. It has more flesh and richness that I normally expect from Bendigo – a very impressive texture. Very classy wine with excellent cellaring potential.

2014 China Terrace - Pleasurable Pinot Noir
95 pts, 5 stars
Dense, ripe, Pinot Noir with a mix of sweet fruits (raspberry, plum) and more savoury characters (chocolate, anise/spice and aromatic wild herbs) plus spicy oak. Very appealing and accessible wine with a silken and succulent texture.

2014 China Terrace Pinot Noir
5 stars
Boldly coloured, it is sturdy (14 per cent alcohol), vibrant and smooth, with fine-grained tannins, concentrated, ripe plum/spice flavours, and earthy, savoury notes adding complexity.

2014 Glenlee Pinot Noir
4 Stars
The bouquet is complex, with hints of dried herbs and earth; the palate is rich and supple, with generous, ripe plum and dried-herb flavours, gentle tannins and a finely balanced, long finish.

2014 Le Maitre Pinot Noir
5 Stars
Densely coloured, it conveys a real sense of youthful vigour and long-term potential. Rich, sweet-fruited and supple, with substantial body and fresh, highly concentrated cherry/plum flavours, it's still a baby, with lovely fragrance, depth and harmony.

2014 School House Pinot Noir
5 Stars
Boldly coloured, it is mouthfilling and supple, with a delicious surge of ripe cherryish, plummy, spicy flavours, showing lovely vibrancy and harmony. A powerful, concentrated red with a real sense of drive through the palate, it should flourish with cellaring.

Winemaker Tasting Notes

2014 Le Maitre Pinot Noir
The 2014 Le Maitre is from our certified-organic Home Block vineyard located at the winery and originally planted by Gibbston Valley Winery founder, Alan Brady, in 1983.

The vines have a natural balance born from age and a deep root profile and impart pristine and unaffected aromas of dark plum and ferric earth to this Pinot Noir.

2014 Glenlee Pinot Noir
From a close-planted vineyard, with 6000 vines per hectacre, the 2014 Glenlee Pinot Noir is svelte and superbly light-footed. Glenlee is located in Gibbston next to the winery.

The 2014 Glenlee has sturdy, spicy and slightly smoky flavours that frame a very lush, long finish.

2014 School House Pinot Noir
Located in Bendigo, School House is our highest-altitude site offering incredible views and even better wine. Our 2014 School House has alluring dark fruit, coffee and chocolate aromatics.

The palate is darkly layered with lush plum on the front and a scorchingly intense mid palate. It’s full with suavely-sculpted back tannin and a sustained finish.

2014 China Terrace Pinot Noir
Another high-altitude site in Bendigo, China Terrace produces fruit with dark and brooding flavours missed with beautiful red floral tones. Our 2014 China Terrace has a deep, dark fruit component with attractive spices on the nose.

Medium to full-bodied, it draws on a length of sweet spice and minerality to cut through alluring black and blueberry layers.
