Handpicking School House vintage 2016

Here’s what handpicking fruit in our organic School House vineyard looks like for vintage 2016. The highest of our Bendigo vineyards, this site gives spectacular views and even better wine.

The beauty of this site stems from the combination of finer, complex, glacial outwash soils and altitude. Cooler and later-ripening Pinot Noir gains remarkable intensity, elegance and perfume.

Wine accolades

Fruit from this site is used to handcraft our single vineyard School House Pinot Noir. One of our top-selling single vineyards, this Pinot Noir is a three-time Pure Elite Gold Air New Zealand Wine Award winner starting with the 2010 vintage.

More recently, the 2014 vintage was rated as the No. 1 Central Otago Pinot Noir by NZ Master of Wine Bob Campbell. He described it as a “very classy wine with excellent cellaring potential.”

Wine writer Raymond Chan gave the 2014 vintage a 19.5 out of 20 rating and described it as a “full, open and complex layered Pinot Noir with fleshy fruit, savoury whole cluster detail and supple tannin extraction and structure.”

Michael Cooper of “Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines,” gave the 2015 vintage a five-star rating and described it as “Boldly coloured, it is mouthfilling and supple with a delicious surge of ripe cherryish, plummy, spicy flavours, showing lovely vibrancy and harmony. A powerful, concentrated read with a real sense of drive through the palate, it should flourish with cellaring.”

Organic Focus Vineyard Project

This site is also notable for its inclusion in the three-year Organic Focus Vineyard Project conducted by Organic Winegrowers New Zealand. The project included the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages and documented and demonstrated the realities of organic growing in three major New Zealand wine regions. For this project half of the site was managed organically while the other half was conventionally managed.

It ended with shining results proving that organic growing was feasible and could produce fantastic wines, just taste our 2014 Reserve Pinot Noir also from this site. The other half of School House is currently undergoing conversion to organic.

All of the fruit from this and our other vineyards is handpicked and handcrafted to create our range of premium Central Otago, New Zealand wines. From the vine to your glass, good things are coming with our 2016 vintage.
