5 Tasting tips for Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir
Whether it’s to help unwind after a long day or honour a special occasion, there’s nothing that says happiness like a good glass of wine.
Here at Gibbston Valley Winery we think anytime a glass of our hand-crafted Pinot Noir is poured, it’s a moment worth celebrating.
However, just having your favourite bottle of reserve on hand isn’t everything. There are other factors to consider that can vastly influence how your wine smells, tastes and your overall sipping experience.
We consulted with our Gibbston Valley Winery Cellar Door Manager Jim Griffiths to get some tips on how to make the most out of enjoying our elegant and expertly-crafted Pinot Noir.
5 Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir Tasting Tips
1. Make sure you’re serving the wine at the right temperature.
Regardless of season, the ideal temperature for Pinot Noir is 18 degrees C. In winter, let your bottle sit at room temperature for optimal drinking enjoyment. During the summer months, consider putting your wine in the refrigerator for just long enough to cool down.
2. Shape matters. Appropriate glassware is as important as what’s in the bottle.
The shape of your glass impacts the wine’s aroma and palate. The unique subtleties and nuances that make our pinots so delightful and distinct will be lost or drastically subdued if you use a glass with a small bowl.
For the best results, use a glass with a wide, round, apple-shaped bowl like Riedel’s Burgundy Red glass. The shape of this glass allows the nose of our pinots to really come through. It’s also been designed so that when you sip, the wine it lands on the ideal part of your tongue to enhance balance, texture and finish.
3. Let the wine breathe.
We admit it may be hard to prolong sipping a glass of our Reserve Pinot Noir, but it pays to wait. To get the most panache from your pinot, give your wine a chance to aerate after you unscrew the cap.
All wine bottles that use screw caps, like ours, are also sealed with carbon dioxide (CO2) to prevent the contents from being damaged by oxidation. By unscrewing the cap you're breaking both a physical and gas barrier. Once that barrier is broken, the wine needs some time to breathe for the flavours to fully emerge.
There are several options when it comes to aerating wine:
- Decanter- These uniquely-shaped glass vessels are specifially designed to help wine breathe. An added bonus is that they look impressive on your table and add prestige to any wine drinking event. Let wine sit in a decanter between one to two hours before drinking.
- Use your glass or open bottle- If you don’t have a decanter, letting your wine sit in a glass or just opening the bottle cap and letting it sit is another method for aerating wine. Obviously, it's not as swanky as the decanter, but it does the trick. If you use your glass, let it sit for an hour. An open bottle should sit for one to two hours.
- Aerator- By the glass aerators like the Vinturi Essential Wine Aerator, are another option. Using something like this lets your wine breathe as you pour it. So if waiting for your wine to aerate isn’t an option, using something like this will ensure you still get the smoothest finish with every sip.
4. Pair your Pinot with the perfect food.
The tannins and spice in our Pinots is the perfect compliment to a meal with red meat on the menu. Something like slow-cooked beef short ribs or Sunday roast (also with beef) are two of Griffiths' favourite wine and food pairings.
5. Be in good company.
You can have the finest wine, glassware and meal waiting, but it won’t mean much if you’re not with a significant other or friends who’ll be happy to engage in the robust conversations that always ensue after a glass or two of our premium Pinot is poured.
