Organic fun at World Yoga Day Festival

It was a day of beautiful weather, sunny smiles and all around good vibes for The Sherwood’s World Yoga Day Festival on 21 Feb. in Queenstown.

More than 100 yogis and the like came out to celebrate and help raise money for World Yoga Day’s TARA Project by making donations to the festival’s all-day line-up of free events.

Together guest contributions totalled more than $2,000 to benefit the TARA Project, a charity based in Sub-Saharan Africa that focuses on providing scholarships to young Kenyan women.

Along with helping to raise money for a good cause, the event drew people of all ages from the community interested in experiencing yoga and many of the natural healing and organic wine and food resources available in Queenstown.

Events were held at venues located throughout The Sherwood and included a line-up of yoga classes offered in various styles and taught by some of Queenstown’s top instructors, a Gibbston Valley organic wine and Sherwood organic food masterclass, medicinal foraging talks by local expert Bridget Healy, a cocktail masterclass with Sherwood’s Paul Shipment, a healing space that offered various massages and natural therapies and live music provided by local artists.

Gibbston Valley Chief Winemaker Christopher Keys along with Sherwood Chef Ainsley Thompson hosted the organic wine and food masterclass held at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Both classes were at capacity, each attracting more than 20 eager guests who were ready to experience organic wine and food.

The wines tasted at the event included the Le Fou Reisling, La Dulcinee Pinot Gris, La Dulcinee Gewurztraminer and Le Maitre Pinot Noir from Gibbston Valley’s BioGro New Zealand certified organic Home Block vineyard. It also featured School House Pinot Noir from the winery’s organic School House site located in Bendigo.

Using ingredients from The Sherwood’s organic on-site garden, Thompson created a refreshing menu of vegetarian dishes to match the wines including a buckwheat and greens salad, beetroot and elderberry in balsamic vinaigrette and house-smoked salmon.

Together the pairings gave guests a sensational and savoury way to learn about and experience organic wine and food.
