Upcoming pick iconic Home Block harvest
Crates of grapes are arriving daily become the norm this time of year with the 2015 harvest to vintage season well underway at Gibbston Valley.
Picking has started at our Bendigo sites including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from China Terrace and Pinot Noir from School House. Hand harvesting fruit from all the Bendigo sites will continue before we start on our later-ripening Gibbston fruit.
It’s a hectic and exciting time of year for everyone at the winery. Those in the office enjoy watching new fruit arrive and getting to see the winemakers work their magic. Who knew being a winemaker also required being highly skilled in the art of forklift driving? While members from our vintage team, despite being exhausted and under pressure, are always quick to smile. Judging by their high spirits, 2015 is going to be another incredible vintage.
The constant flow of incoming fruit is also a sign that it’s almost time to pick from our iconic Home Block vineyard, originally planted by our founder and Central Otago wine pioneer Alan Brady in 1983.
Home Block fruit created the region’s first commercial vintage, 1987 Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir. That release put Central Otago on the map as a world-renown winemaking region, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today the site is certified organic by BioGro New Zealand.
Handpicking fruit from the historic site is a tradition we celebrate with our annual Wine Club Le Maître Day event that usually takes place towards the end of April. To honour the time-tested methods that are at the core of Gibbston Valley, we invite Wine Club members to join our winemakers and vintage team for a morning picking of Home Block fruit followed by more festivities at the winery.
The exact date is yet to be determined. We leave forecasting fruit and Mother Nature up to our winemakers, but we’ll announce the date as soon as we have confirmation from the team.
